Considering Herbal Medicine to Prevent Head Aches and More 1

An herb is a plant or plant part used for its scent, flavor, or therapeutic properties. Herbal medicines are one type of dietary supplement. They are sold as tablets, capsules, powders, teas, extracts, and fresh or dried plants. People use herbal medicines to try to maintain or improve their health.

Did you know that about 25 percent of the drugs prescribed worldwide are derived from plants? Of the 252 drugs in the World Health Organization’s essential medicine list, 11 percent are exclusively of plant origin.

In fact, about 200 years ago the first pharmacological compound, morphine, was produced from opium extracted from the seed pods of the poppy flower. Since then, scientists have been studying plants to create the pharmaceutical products we know today. But after years of over-medicating, facing resistant bacteria in the microbiome and treating the illness rather than the root of the problem, people are beginning to pay more attention to natural, herbal medicine

If you are thinking about using an herbal medicine, first get information on it from reliable sources. Make sure to tell your health care provider about any herbal medicines you are taking.

St. John’s Wort is one of those to be careful with. I once worked with a girl who took that to help relax (she was going through a bad divorce at the time) and she developed some heart issues as a result. It was highly publicized about the risks, just like the diet aid Metabolife back in the 90s maybe. Orange bitters I think was the culprit.

  2. It is always better to ask a reputable and knowledgeable health practitioner if anything you are going to take over the counter, allopathic or natural medicine is right for you.
Somebody who has cardiac arrhythmia couldn´t take ephedra plant, for example, not even a bit of it!
