The new coronavirus has an HIV-like mutation that means its ability to bind with human cells could be up to 1,000 times as strong as the Sars virus, according to new research by scientists in China and Europe.
Other highly contagious viruses, including HIV and Ebola, target an enzyme called furin, which works as a protein activator in the human body. Many proteins are inactive or dormant when they are produced and have to be “cut” at specific points to activate their various functions.

Expect Up To 40% Of Tehran’s Population To Be Infected In 2 Weeks: Iranian Health Official
The Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy notes:
Based on calculations, the authors of the larger study estimate the novel coronavirus has an R0 of 2.2, meaning each case patient could infect more than 2 other people. If accurate, this makes the 2019 nCoV more infectious than the 1918 influenza pandemic virus, which had an R0 of 1.80 (interquartile range: 1.47 to 2.27).
In a preliminary study published Tuesday, scientists at Peking University’s School of Life Sciences and the Institut Pasteur of Shanghai found that a more aggressive type of the new coronavirus had accounted for roughly 70% of analyzed strains, while 30% had been linked to a less aggressive type.
The World Health Organization warned the world was in “uncharted territory” as coronavirus cases continued to spread in the West and Italy announced 27 more people died from the disease.

The WHO said during its Tuesday press conference that the death rate for Covid-19 is higher than the 2% previously believed. By comparison, the flu kills 0.1% of those infected. The WHO credited the “rapidly growing insight” into the virus thanks to the research that has been carried out since the outbreak began.
“More people are susceptible to infection and some will suffer serious disease. Globally about 3.4 percent of COVID-19 cases have died,” he said. “By comparison, seasonal flu generally kills far fewer than 1 percent of those infected.”
With growing concerns about air travel due to the breakout of Covid-19 in Asia, South Korea’s transport ministry announced that all passengers bound for the US would have to undergo mandatory temperature checks before boarding planes starting March 3
