Expressing increasing alarm about mounting infections, the World Health Organization declared Wednesday that the global coronavirus crisis is now a pandemic.

“We have, therefore, made the assessment that COVID-19 can be characterized as a pandemic,” he said at a briefing in Geneva.

“All countries can still change the course of this pandemic. If countries detect, test, treat, isolate, trace and mobilize their people in the response,” Tedros said.

    1. I know, Linda. We are living in very interesting times: President Donald Trump has suspended all travel from Europe for the next 30 days.

A fellow blogger is going to Portugal in a few weeks – I felt badly for her, but this morning it seems that Americans will be able to travel to/from Europe and only problematic if you are a foreign national. they said the government has “walked back” that statement (hopefully – people will not get their $$ back on vacations as I heard the other day on the radio … it is refunded only if you are sick and I’m sure they will modify travel insurance restrictions). Scary – never lived through anything like this – not of this magnitude. I worry a little as I’m over 60 (63 and next month 64).

  3. President Trump says: “this is not a financial crisis…” but but… it is! No travel from Europe to the US for 30 days…of course is an economic disruption! I have never seen him so nervous, his breathing….

  4. This is definitely not good. President Trump said nothing on the massive social disruptions/distancing. The travel restrictions are incomprehensible (it’s here!). The focus on economy (70% of speech so far) seems to miss the point. The “we have so many fewer cases” is a total setup (for him). We REALLY don´t know yet.

    1. Hal, great comment…. “social, health, financial, whatever crisis …… but why!?” but why?! I would love to elaborate on that, and the comment section wouldn’t be enough for me to explain what I know, read, etc. I would like to make a blog post on that, and if you allow me I would quote you with a link. You have inspired me now for me to talk about these interesting life we are living now around the world.
It is a very interesting question and it needs an interesting answer. If you don’t want me to quote you I will go ahead and make a post without mentioning you.
People who ask questions are usually the smartest ones.
