During heart surgery, a highly trained group works as a team.
The cardiovascular surgeon heads up the surgery team and performs the key parts of the surgery.
The assisting surgeons follow the direction of the cardiovascular surgeon.
The cardiovascular anesthesiologist gives you the medicines that make you sleep during the surgery (called anesthesia) and monitors the ventilator, which breathes for you during surgery.
The perfusion technologists run the heart-lung machine.
The cardiovascular nurses are specially trained to assist in heart surgery.
Coronary-artery bypass grafting (CABG), introduced in the 1960s, remains the standard revascularization treatment for complex coronary disease.1 The left internal thoracic artery, with its excellent patency when used as a graft, is the conduit of choice for anastomosis to the left anterior descending coronary artery.
“In some ways, what I do is as much art as it is science,” said Dr. Kirshbom. “Some hearts are missing parts or are put together the wrong way. That’s where the art comes in. Many of our operations require literal rebuilding of cardiac and vascular structures. As one of my colleagues says, each child is a custom job.”
Yes, there is always good and bad in all, isn’t? And bacteria is not the exception.
Our bodies have different tissues full with excellent microbes that help us fight the bad ones. It is so important that we take care and preserve this kind, helpful and faithful bacteria, so we can have an army of healthy tiny micro bio-soldiers for the attack of the bad ones when necessary.
In fact, you couldn’t survive without some bacteria! Good ones help digest your food and fight invading microbes. Also, they are used in making some of the dairy products you like to eat and also some types of medicines! It is one of the best decomposers – they break down dead and decaying organic matter, from leaves to insects.
Best of all, it is are being used to clean up oil spills to keep your environment healthy too.

Just like when you want to see a medical doctor, you want to make sure that you are consulting a true qualified graduate medical doctor, don’t you? You want to see his medical license and maybe you check him/her out on the Internet or even call the medical board of your state/country to corroborate that s/he is in fact a physician.
And that is how you should behave when you navigate in the internet, exactly the same way. You should always make sure that the person giving advice has the proper qualifications and professional training in the field you want advise or guideline.
There are thousands of people in social media and all over the Internet that want to make a quick buck, and they use their expertise in advertising to start a digital business promoting health products, physical therapy treatments, “health magazines” that have damaged a lot of people who are desperate for a “cure” and they haven’t found it in traditional medicine for different reasons:
Graduate medical doctors who are not well trained.
Lack of interest by the healthcare provider in the benefit of the patient.
Medical doctors who just care about billing the medical insurance for pure profit.
Physicians who never had an excellent qualified expertise attending patients as a whole.
Physicians who do not keep on studying the newest medical advances and do not keep up to date on medica scientific advances.
Even the most credible information found online is useless in the absence of expert physician evaluation and diagnosis. Tell your doctor you fully trust what you have read online. Email them the article that’s captured your interest, or print it out and bring it to your next appointment. A good doctor will walk you through it.
I was moved by her opinion and her pain of losing somebody in her family she really loved very much. So, as a medical doctor I do agree with several points she makes. She is of course referring to medical doctors in her country (US). I practice in Mexico and she actually praised some medical-biological scientists in Mexico City who, recently, discovered and developed a vaccine to cure the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)
So, I left this comment
And I got a lot of people liking my opinion, for which I am sincerely pleased and grateful.
But still, there are some comments directed to me that I find totally cruel, inappropriate and ignorant. Like this one:
Franklin D Roosevelt, the 32nd president of the United States of America, died at the age of 63, on April 12, 1945. I’m not going to tell you data about him and bore you to tears. We all know we can “Google” his name and find his bio anywhere in the interwebs.
What I want to tell you today about FDR is what I think about how strong minded he was. His compassion and empathy towards humanity, and how he inspires me to help others and stand strong!
I don’t know if you are familiar with him going to “Warm Springs” in Georgia after he got poliomyelitis (most commonly known as polio). His depression about losing his ability to walk, his struggle to find his way back to society and move around, crippled him even more than his disability to walk.
It is important that I emphasize what I mentioned above: his depression and struggle crippled him more than the disease itself.I tell you why: the mental ability to overcome a physical challenge marks how a person will develop a strong or weak character. That mental ability will make anyone regain confidence, emotional strength and power to go on in life with an unbreakable positive attitude.
Well, in Warm Springs – the only hospital devoted solely to the treatment of poliomyelitis victims in the world -, he found himself and discovered the existence of many others with the same illness he had. These patients were coming from different backgrounds and privileges -or the lack of- in society: rich, poor, with education or without it, children, young adults and adults, all suffering from poliomyelitis.
Franklin D Roosevelt learned how to interact with them, how to get involved in the same activities they did. He shared his time with children and learned from them. He admired the courage of little children and how they never gave up. These children were strong minded and strong spirited and walked, with extreme difficulty and pain but with a huge smile, and that my readers, is what we all should do every day of our lives.
While many succumb to the trauma of failure and lose confidence and performance, resilient individuals rise again, learn from their failure and improve their performance. It takes passion for life, will and a positive-stubborn attitude to never give up, to never give in.
Poliomyelitis deepened and grounded FDR. It made him a champion of children with polio—an effort that led to the March of Dimes and the later Salk and Sabin vaccines—and for that matter a champion of all people who suffered hardship, physical, mental or emotional.
A motivational quote by President FDR:
Physical strength can never permanently withstand the impact of spiritual force. Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Always remember: While you are alive and breathing, make sure you are able to say “I am still standing”.
IMPORTANT NOTE from Dr. Castro:
Just because I admire the man who he was, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, please don’t assume that I am a Democrat. Or because I have expressed in the past my admiration for some Republican people, it does not mean that I am a Republican. I admire the human being, no matter his political affiliation nor religion or the lack thereof.
I am a true freedom thinker who does not like labels. I don’t follow hypocrites. I admire what I think it’s admirable to me, and criticise what I sincerely think has to be denounced as a bad policy, a harmful action, or a crime.
Fibromyalgia is not “an imaginary disease”, it is real and it needs to be addressed as such. It is a seriously misunderstood illness, mainly because, as you know, many sufferers may not “look sick.” This is why it is so important to talk about it as a so-called “Invisible Disease,” because not a lot of people nor medical doctors take it seriously.
Clinicians should be familiar with the signs and symptoms of fibromyalgia and diagnose the condition with minimum investigation. Any Medical Doctor who doesn’t know how to detect this pathology, needs to take some courses about how to diagnose it and treat it.
If you are suffering from fibromyalgia, you need to know some facts about it and remember: do not feel shame for feeling the way you do. You can control this disorder and don’t let it over-power you.
Fibromyalgia can be a hard disease to get a diagnosis for since so few people understand it.
It is imperative that we learn and educate our patients, my followers and our loved ones about what fibro warriors go through every day. Let’s take in consideration their suffering and support them fully.
UNDERSTANDING THE ILLNESS:
Patients with fibromyalgia experience body pain that weakens them. There is chronic aching in different points of the body, stiffness and tenderness.
They feel tired most of the time and this makes them nervous, worry and in some cases their blood pressure tends to increase due to the pain and the worryness.
Patients often tell me that they feel their vitality is going away and their strength with it.
Problems for mental concentration start to appear because of the lack of serenity and constant pain that doesn’t go away with pain killers. Yes, the pain, they say, might subside for a little bit, few hours maybe, but it comes back, sometimes in the same area of the legs, knees, shoulders. Some other times it comes back stronger attacking another area of the body.
Patients say “even the skin burns, it hurts so much it is scary”. Patients do hurt, not only physically but mentally, so much that their quality of living begins to diminish. At this time is when this disease -fibromyalgia- causes panic attacks, excessive crying and/or depression.
FIBROMYALGIA IS A DEBILITATING DISEASE
Patients tell me they have problems to go up and downstairs, difficulty to lift up the arms. They feel a burning sensation along the inside of the skin of the legs, the arms, even the back.
They refer to a constant “pain in my lower back”, call lumbalgia.
The cervical spine and both sides of the neck hurt so much some doctors confuse the diagnosis with torticollis and prescribe medicine for it. Of course, the patient might feel some relieve for a day or two and then the pain comes back.
Muscles, tendons, ligaments and skin burn and hurt, making the movements of all the parts of the body strenuous, walking and daily activities very arduous and depending on the gravity of the illness, even impossible.
…include headaches, lose of strength in the hands to hold objects, which they fall off their hands: “Things just fall off my hands. It’s like my muscles don’t have strength anymore”.
Tripping on is more common, clumsiness, general discomfort. Sometimes patients lose balance and fall backwards or forward.
ORIGINS OF THE FIBROMYALGIA
This illness has multiple causes and factors. Usually a very stressful childhood, child abuse of any kind.
PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) of any origin: soldiers who come back from war, a stressful or violent marriage, separations, forced immigration, traumatic abandonment of any kind, the loss of loved ones, even the loss of a limb can trigger this syndrome.
THE PATH TO RECOVERY
Recovery is possible. Taking control of your life is absolutely needed to achieve this goal. You can be happy and pain free increasing the quality of your life.
Dessert is a happy food, and they can enlighten anyone’s mood and bring a smile to the face.
Eating excessive volumes of sweets is not good for our health. It can potentially lead to a range of health issues in the future. It doesn’t mean that they can’t be enjoyed in moderation. Take a bite of your favourite chocolate or ice cream.
Eating in moderation is not bad, and we can allow ourselves to have it at least once a week. Don’t deprive yourself, instead reward yourself with it occasionally.

I have no doubt that prevention is the best way to take care of our bodies: it prolongs our life span by avoiding diseases like trauma, infections, even diabetes, high blood pressure, heart attacks and others.
We must use our common sense and education in this matter in order to stay healthy. A proper way of eating, exercising regularly, including the ingestion of some natural products I don’t oppose, I even encourage some of my patients to take some vitamins, roots, seeds, depending on their needs and always guided by a reputable-scientific and well trained health provider.
The problem I have is with people who aren’t medical doctors and they create health organizations, write books, give conferences and sell vitamins and naturopathic “cures”. And in order to enhance their financial income they try to demean the science of medicine “…people all over the world have bought my books with terminal illnesses. I wrote a book about how to cure cancer, people around the world with terminal cancer buy my book, it costs 15 dollars, they go home and they cure their cancer”… quoting Raymond Francis at minute 15:29 in one of his conferences videos.
You can google him and find the video in YouTube. If you want the link to it send me an email or contact me and I will send you the link. I don’t feel like adding the link directly in this post because I don’t want to give more publicity to these fraudulent health practices.
Anyways, like him there are many others, and that is worrisome. They abuse their knowledge in selling, the desperation in terminal ill patients and the sincere desire of many to be healthy in order to sell them their products and “health conferences”. These quacks know how to convert very smart men and women into true believers on their quackery.
This person I mentioned above bases his talk criticizing medical doctors instead of telling us what kind of disease he had when he was 46 and supposedly he “cured” himself. If he is against the science of medicine then why does he relies so much on the World Medical Association statistics? He repeats himself a lot, sometimes he doesn’t finish his sentences, he mentions “his big four things” to be healthy and he mentions only 3, forgets number 4. Is he getting dementia?
The author of this video is worse than a not health professional, he has quack credentials:
Raymond Francis, DSc, MSc, RNC, is a doctor of naturopathy, a chemist and a graduate of MIT, and a registered nutrition consultant.
Naturopathy is the ultimate quackery, and RNC is not a legitimate nutrition certification, only RD is. Although, as quacks usually do, there are no real references to his sources, one can go beyond the ad hominem and analyze this:
“Cow milk contains the wrong proteins for human consumption. It is rich in proteins called caseins which are difficult for humans to digest. … These undigested proteins enter the lower intestines where they putrefy. This creates highly toxic by-products which poison us”.
This is abject nonsense that was popular in the nineteenth century but abandoned by medical science in the 1920s. Other things in the item are contradictory: the suggestion that milk is designed for infants but two-year olds show problems from drinking milk.
People have to educate themselves about fraudulent “health advisors” and their products. Learn the facts and share the based-science information with your loved ones.
